JN-RD-6020-JN5148 Coin Cell Powered Active RFID Tag

The Active RFID Tag Reference Design can be used in conjunction with the Jennic evaluation kits and the Active RFID Software Reference Design (JN-RD-6009), to develop IEEE 802.15.4 RFID applications and accelerate time-to-market. The hardware provides a stable platform to design and test Tag applications, as they would be used in practice, by meeting the special demands of being powered from a compact, lightweight and low-cost coin cell battery.

Tag applications impose low duty-cycle but high current demands on batteries. Typically, a Tag application will require short pulse currents, of the order of milli-amperes, when transmitting and receiving, but draw only micro-amperes at other times. The Tag has been designed with this operation in mind and applications must be developed not to exceed the maximum pulse current capabilities of the hardware.

The design is based on the Jennic JN5148 wireless microcontroller, which is mounted on the Tag, and all RF layout and decoupling issues have been addressed, including a low-cost PCB antenna.
